Claire Denis is a
French director, scriptwriter and professor at La Fémis in Paris. Her films
address issues of subjectivity and desire, sexual transgression, violence, and
post-colonialism from both the perspective of the colonized and the colonizing.
Her works have been described as dream-like and enigmatic and she is known for
her interest in formal exploration and and experimental style. Films of her
include: Chocolat (1988), J’ai pas sommeil (1994), Bon Travail (1990), Trouble
Every Day (2001), and White Material (2009). She is currently collaborating on
a science-fiction project with writer Zadie Smith. Denis will be discussing her
work.
