Dan Graham presents New Jersey

Die Ausstellung im Portikus - Dan Graham Presents New Jersey - zeigt neue Fotografien Dan Grahams, die 2006 in Kollaboration mit dem Architekturlehrstuhl der Columbia University in New York entstanden sind, Seite an Seite mit Fotografien aus seiner Serie Homes for America aus dem Jahr 1966. Bereits in den frühen 1960er Jahren entstanden letztere, bewusst im Stil eines Amateurs oder Photojournalisten, mit einer preiswerten und handlichen Kodak Kamera aufgenommene Bilder suburbaner Wohnhäuser, Gewerbeanlagen und städtischer Randzonen in New Jersey – Orte die das gewöhnliche und unspektakuläre, aber auch uniforme Amerika zeigen. Die Beschäftigung mit dem Seriellen, mit Standardisierung und Kontinuität stehen bei sowohl den älteren, als auch den jüngeren Fotografien im Mittelpunkt. Das wiederkehrende Interesse an der Aufwertung des Alltäglichen findet hier präzise Form, gebunden an Fragen nach der individuellen Wahrnehmung von sozialem Raum und Raumbildung durch soziale Gruppen.
Dan Graham wurde 1942 in Urbana, Illinois geboren und wuchs zeitweilig im Bundesstaat New Jersey auf. Er lebt und arbeitet in New York.

Dan Graham’s art is concerned with complex issues of cultural ideologies and ordering principles, with the reflection on the question related to the autonomy of the artwork playing a significant role. Urban surfaces, architectural décor and the discourse on forms, in general, are at the fore of his considerations. He always makes reference to concrete elements of everyday culture, combining minimalist forms with playful humor. He is also strongly dedicated to the relation of the subject to postmodern developments and architectures.
Dan Graham’s career as an artist did not progress in the classical sense. In 1964 he founded the John Daniels Gallery with friends, where the first shows of Dan Flavin and Sol LeWitt, among others, were on view. A year later, after the gallery was closed, Graham began with his own artistic work. From the very start, his artistic career was shaped in a very interdisciplinary way, since he simultaneously worked as a music journalist, photographer, art theorist, and culture critic.

Jesko Fezer: Design Problem Reality

If anyone out there still believes that architects are people with strong mathematical skills who build houses (and there are many who do) then they should look out for Jesko Fezer. Being active as a publisher, curator, artist, and exhibition designer Berlin-based Fezer renegotiates the traditional media of architecture. He is the co-founder and manager of the thematic bookshop “Pro qm” in Berlin and the co-editor of the political architecture magazine “An Architektur” which also initiated the international “Camp for Oppositional Architecture” in Berlin and Utrecht. In the frame of his cooperation “ifau und Jesko Fezer” he realized projects in Munich, Stuttgart, Berlin, Utrecht, Graz, New York und London. Having taught at various universities, he was a visiting professor for Urban Research in the master’s degree course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg and currently leads the research project “Civic City” at the ZHDK in Zürich.
Fezer´s publications include „Hier entsteht. Strategien partizipativer Architektur“, „Lucius Burckhardt: Wer plant die Planung?“, „Planungsmethodik gestern“. He has curated the exhibitions “Urban Conditions” at the 3rd Berlin Biennial (2004), „Social Diagrams. Planning reconsidered” (Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, 2008), “In the Desert of Modernity. Colonias Planung and After“ (Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, 2008).

Sarah Morris: If Direction is a Look

Sarah Morris is a painter and filmmaker who lives and works in New York and London. Her films include „Midtown“(1998), „Capital“(2001), Los Angeles (2004), „1972“ and „Beijing“ (2009). She has participated in numerous group exhibitions including the 4th Site Santa Fe Biennial (2001), 25th São Paolo Biennial (2002) and „Days Like These“, Tate Triennial (2003). Solo shows include Nationalgalerie im Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin (2001), Kunstforeningen, Copenhagen (2004), Moderna Museet, Stockholm (2005), Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2005), Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover (2005) and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (2006). Her most recent exhibition „Gemini Dressage“ (including the European premiere of her latest film “Beijing”) will be on show at MMK in Frankfurt am Main.
Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev: Che fare? What has to be done?

In her lecture at the Städelschule newly appointed Documenta director Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev asks „Che fare? What has to be done?“. Referring to her curatorial practice she investigates the current condition of the visual arts and its consequences on exhibition making.
Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev is a curator and writer based in Rome, Turin and New York. She is currently the Chief Curator at the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art in Turin and was the Artistic Director for the 16th Biennale of Sydney “Titled Revolutions – Forms That Turn” in 2008. From 1999 to 2001 she was Senior Curator of exhibitions at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center. She curated the first retrospective exhibition of Janet Cardiff’s works (PS1, 2001), “Matrix.2” by Francis Alÿs, the group show “The Moderns / I Moderni” (2003), a survey exhibition of works by William Kentridge (2004), and “The Pantagruel Syndrome” (2005).

Sarah Thornton: Seven Days in the Art World

Seven Days in the Art World by Sarah Thornton is an ethnography and a social history of the recent past. Set in New York, Los Angeles, London, Basel, Venice, and Tokyo, the book is populated by characters who espouse conflicting definitions of art. Some see it as a luxury good or entertainment, others view it as an intellectual calling, a job description, or a kind of alternative religion.
The Canadian Sarah Thornton has a BA in Art History and made her PhD in Sociology on Club Cultures: Music, Media and Subcultural Capital. Once a member of faculty at Sussex University where she ran the MA in Media Studies, Thornton then became a Visiting Research Fellow at Goldsmiths, University of London. As a freelance journalist and author she contributes on regularly basis amongst others to The Economist, Artforum, The Art Newspaper, and The New Yorker.
Julia Voss is co-editor (with Niklas Maak) of the art department of Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Nikolaus Hirsch is currently guest professor for Art and Architecture at the Städelschule and host of the lecture series.
In cooperation with the S. Fischer Verlag, Frankfurt am Main.

Misunderstanding

Rivane Neuenschwander's art has the precisely orchestrated, unforced economy of what she has termed "ethereal materialism". Often apparent is her fascination with serendipity and the agency of living systems, such as garden snails that munch away at rice-paper squares or ants that orchestrate a parade of confetti dots. The activation of sensory memory and trusting the realization of her work to the generosity of other people or nonhuman organisms frequently sparks Neuschwander's work to life. In I Wish Your Wish, the artist invites viewers to select a ribbon imprinted with a wish and leave behind a wish of their own. The ribbon can be tied to the wrist and worn until it falls off at which point the wish may be realized. Another work, the video Pangaea (2008), takes its title from the vast land mass that existed on earth about 250 million years ago, before this "supercontinent" broke apart into the land masses we know today. Neuenschwander used a stop-frame animation technique to record hundreds of ants as they crawled over and ate a plate of carpaccio meat, giving the viewer the sense that these tiny insects are moving and shaping an evolving map of the world.
Rivane Neuenschwander lives and works in Belo Horizonte (Brazil). Her work was shown in major group exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale 2005, São Paulo Biennale 2008, „Life on Mars“ at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh (2008) and „50 Moons of Saturn“ (Torino Triennale, 2008). Her solo shows include „Spell“ at Portikus (2001), „Suspension Point“ at Sounth London Gallery (2008), and „To/From: Rivane Neuenschwander“ at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis (2008).

Kissing Architecture. Super-Disciplinarity and Confounding Media

Sylvia Lavin is Professor of Architectural History and Theory at UCLA, where she was Chairperson from 1996 to 2006. Currently, she is Visiting Professor of Architectural Theory at Princeton University's School of Architecture. A leading figure in current debates, Lavin is known both for her scholarship and for her criticism in contemporary architecture and design.
She has published „Quatremere de Quincy and the Invention of a Modern Language of Architecture“ (MIT Press, 1992) and „Form Follows Libido: Architecture and Richard Neutra in a Psychoanalytic Culture“ (MIT Press, 2005). Her next book, „The Flash in the Pan and Other Forms of Architectural Contemporaneity“ will be published by MIT Press in 2009 and she is working on a series of exhibitions on design culture of the late 1960s. She is an editor of „Crib Sheets“, a compilation of polemical writings and sound bites on current buzzwords issued by Monacelli press.
